Inside the 6-Layer System

Mold is the first question everyone asks about a soft-walled structure. Here's how our 6-layer humidity regulation system answers it, and what else it does along the way.

Canvas structures have a reputation problem, and it's usually earned. Warm, moist air inside meets a cold canvas or canopy surface, condensation forms where you can't see it, and mold follows. It's the single biggest reason people hesitate on a yurt, and it's the problem our 6-layer system was built to solve.

Why a single layer of canvas isn't enough

A basic canvas wall is one barrier doing several jobs at once: keeping weather out, holding warmth in, and letting moisture escape, and it can't do all three well simultaneously. Push it to keep weather out and it traps moisture inside. Make it breathable and it stops insulating. Most imported yurt kits use exactly this kind of single-layer canopy, which is why mold complaints are so common with them.

What the system needs to do

Rather than one layer compromising on everything, our canopy is built as a stack of layers that each do one job well: managing moisture movement so condensation doesn't form inside the wall, insulating so the yurt holds temperature in both directions, and letting the structure breathe so damp air has somewhere to go instead of sitting against the cover. The outer layer is a UV-stable PVC cover engineered for Australian weather, not canvas. Done properly, the result is a wall that stays dry on both sides regardless of the temperature difference between inside and out.

More than just moisture control

The same layered approach picks up two more benefits along the way. The additional insulation from the layer stack means the yurt holds its temperature noticeably better than a single-canvas structure, which matters both for comfort and for heating and cooling costs. And the extra mass in the wall dampens rain noise considerably compared to a conventional canvas yurt, so a downpour on the roof is a background sound rather than something you have to talk over.

Standard, not optional

The 6-layer system isn't an upgrade you choose, it's what every Living Yurt is built with. It's the reason we can say our yurts are designed for permanent, year-round living in Australian conditions rather than just fair-weather use.
